When to Have Your Oil Changed

Oil Level Check near Atlantic City, NJ First, you’ll want to determine what type of oil is inside your engine. There are two kinds of oil: conventional and synthetic. With conventional oil, it is usually recommended to have your oil changed every 5,000 miles.

If your vehicle takes synthetic oil, you can go more miles between oil changes. This type of oil should be changed about every 7,500 miles but can also last up to 10,000 miles. There are a handful of factors, though, that can require you to change your oil more or less frequently, including your daily driving habits as well as the weather. This is why it is wise to get in the habit of checking your oil often to examine its condition.

Signs Your Engine Oil Needs to Be Changed

Following the recommended intervals in your owner’s manual is a great start to staying on top of your routine maintenance, including oil changes. Like we mentioned, though, there are other factors at play that may require an oil change at a sooner or later time. There are ways to identify if this is the case. Here are some common signs that it is time for you to schedule an oil change.

Low Level: It is best to check your oil regularly to assess its level. When you take a look at the dipstick, you’ll want to make sure there is enough oil within the engine. Also, be sure to take into account the color of the oil. If it shines with an amber color, the oil is in good condition. If the oil is a darker color, this is an indication it is time for an oil change.

Low Oil LightDashboard Light: When you see your oil pressure light illuminate on your dashboard, your car is letting you know that the oil pressure is low in your engine. You may also see your check engine light flash on as well. When this happens, be sure to get your oil changed as soon as possible.

Loud Noises from Engine: Your engine relies on the oil to keep it properly lubricated, so its moving parts can freely and smoothly operate. When your engine oil becomes too old, it loses its ability to perform this job, and those moving parts in the engine start to grind against one another. This can result in unusual sounds coming from your engine. You’ll want to not only have your oil changed when this happens but also your engine inspected to make sure there isn’t any damage to its components.
