Signs You Need Your Brakes Replaced
Because the brakes are vital to your safety, they need to be looked over at the first sign of trouble. The brakes may even need to be changed to help protect you on the roads of Atlantic City, Egg Harbor, and Vineland.
There are a number of different signs you need your brakes replaced, which we’ll cover below. Read through our informative guide, then contact BMW of Atlantic City as soon as brake service is needed.
1. Squealing or Squeaking Noises
Many brake pads are designed with built-in “wear indicators.” These metal tabs are located near the top of the brake pad and will emit a squealing noise when it’s scraping against the brake rotors.
This indicates that the pads have gotten too thin and will need to be changed right away.
2. Grinding Sounds
Rather than a squeaking noise, you may hear a more pronounced grinding sound whenever you hit the brakes.
This could be for a number of reasons. There could be a small rock or some gravel caught in the brake caliper unit. This can be easily remedied with a quick removal of the debris.
On the other hand, you may be hearing metal-on-metal scraping. This is when the brake pads are completely worn through and are creating grooves in the brake rotor.
3. Burning Smell
If you start to smell a sharp chemical odor when braking, the brakes or clutch may be overheating.
You’ll want to pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so. Then, check that the parking brake has been fully released and give some time for the brakes to cool completely. Otherwise, the brake fluid could boil, which would result in a complete failure of this vital vehicle component.
4. Feel Vibrations When Braking
When you brake, you may feel vibrations from different parts of the car—all of which could indicate different issues.
For example, shaking in the steering wheel could mean that you have an uneven rotor. Otherwise, if the brake pedal vibrates, the pad adhesive may be getting hot and smearing across the rotor. This happens when the brake pad wears down and may not be distributing evenly. Technicians call this “glazing” and could cause the pedals to vibrate.
5. Car Pulls to One Side When Braking
The brake pads in your BMW won’t always wear out at the same rate. If this happens, the vehicle may pull slightly to the left or right.
If you go too long without getting the issue fixed, you could further damage the car’s:
- Steering rack
- Ball joints
- Wheel bearings
There are other possible causes for the car drifting to one side. You could have uneven tire pressure, a defective wheel bearing, or a failing brake caliper. Either way, you’ll want to have a service technician look at your automobile right away.
6. Soft Brake Pedal
You’ll also need immediate assistance if the brake pedal feels “spongy” or sinks all the way to the floor.
This could happen because of air or moisture in the braking system or an issue with the master cylinder. In general, the pedal should stop 1 to 1.5 inches from the floor. Otherwise, you run the risk of not being able to stop your BMW in time.
7. Leaking Fluid
If the brake pedal feels soft, have a technician check for leaking fluid in the master cylinder or anywhere else in your vehicle’s braking system.
The master cylinder creates power for the brakes and has a reservoir that contains fluid. That fluid is then pushed through thin piping, creating hydraulic pressure to bring your car to a stop. If fluid is leaking, there may not be enough power for the pads to clamp down on the rotors. This would lead to a delay in braking, which could be quite dangerous.
8. Indicator Light Appears
Some automobiles have warning lights that tell you when it’s time to replace the brake pads. Otherwise, you may see a light on the dashboard showing you’re due for an inspection or that another issue needs to be addressed.
Because there are various reasons why indicator lights may appear on your BMW, you’ll want to have the car looked over as soon as possible by a professional.
