BMW X3 vs BMW X1

Many drivers near Atlantic City, Egg Harbor, and Vineland, NJ, find themselves torn between two very capable crossover Sports Activity Vehicles® (SAVs®): the compact 2022 BMW X3 and the subcompact 2022 BMW X1. Each ride has its own set of advantages for local drivers, and we at BMW of Atlantic City want to help match you with the right one.

When you read our 2022 BMW X3 vs. BMW X1 comparison, you’ll learn how these vehicles stack up against each other in various ways. Decide which qualities are most important to you, and you’ll know which crossover to choose!

2022 X3 VS 2022 X1: SIZING UP THESE SUVS

The first spec to consider between these two models is size. When you look at these compact and subcompact crossovers side by side, the difference is immediately noticeable.

For example, the X3 has a bit more cargo volume than the X1. When the rear seats are folded down in the X3, you’ll get 62.7 cubic feet of space. With that much cargo space, you’ll have plenty of room to conveniently transport small furniture.

The X1 offers 58.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo room, which is still quite commendable.

On the other hand, the smaller BMW X1 offers slightly more rear legroom at 37 inches vs. the 36.4 inches in the BMW X3. Its larger legroom gives the BMW X1 extra space if you need to accommodate adults in the second row.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE SPECS

Under the hood of the BMW X3, you’ll find a standard 2.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine, which produces 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine provides a bit more power than the engine in the BMW X1 and may prove beneficial in getting up to speed on the highway.

Inside the BMW X1 is a similar 2.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine that delivers 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. While they will both come standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission with Sport and Manual shift modes, the X3 will offer extra control with standard steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and Launch Control.

However, by trading off raw power, the 2022 BMW X1 has a slight advantage in terms of fuel economy. It gets an EPA-estimated 24 city and 33 highway MPG, letting you drive farther on less fuel.1

Meanwhile, the 2022 BMW X3 can achieve EPA-estimated 25 city and 29 highway MPG.1 If your commutes consist mostly of highway travels, the BMW X1 may be a better option for you.

ADVANCED INTERIOR TECHNOLOGY

The 2022 BMW X3 and 2022 BMW X1 offer many of the same technologies to help make your rides more convenient and comfortable. Some of those shared standard features include:

  • Apple CarPlay™ lets you hook up a compatible iPhone to send texts, make phone calls, and more with the iDrive infotainment system.
  • Active Driving Assistant is a suite of driver-assistive systems that includes Frontal Collision Warning and Speed Limit Info among many others.
  • Lane Departure Warning helps make sure you’re aware of your surroundings and can warn you if you’re close to going over the lane markers.

Additionally, you’ll have the HiFi Sound System, which includes 12 speakers in the X3 and seven speakers in the X1.
