2018 X3 vs X1: Sizing Up These SUVs2018 BMW X1

As you might expect, the first item we’d like to cover in this 2018 X3 vs. X1 matchup is size. When you look at compact and subcompact crossovers side-by-side, the difference in size is immediately noticeable.

The X3 has a bit more cargo volume than the X1: 62.7 cubic feet when rear seats are down. That’s plenty of space to hold small furniture items, if you need a convenient way to transport them. The X1 offers 58.7 cubic feet, which comes close but falls a bit behind.

Perhaps counterintuitively, the smaller BMW X1 manages to offer a smidge more rear legroom (37 inches) than the larger X3 (36.4 inches), giving the former a minor advantage if you need to seat adults in the rear seat.

Engine Performance Specs

Under the hood of the BMW X3, you’ll find a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine, capable of producing up to 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That’ll give you a bit more juice when you need to get up to speed on the highway than the 2.0L turbocharged I-4 powering the X1, which gets 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

However, by trading off raw power, the X1 has a slight advantage in terms of fuel economy. It gets an EPA-estimated 23 city and 32 highway MPG, letting you drive farther on less fuel. The X3 is efficient, but its 23 city and 30 highway MPG falls slightly short of the X1 in terms of highway fuel economy.
